Ampersand is East Africa's first commercial electric-motorcycle company, founded in 2016 and headquartered in Kigali, with operations in Kenya. Its flagship e-moto — the Alpha — was designed hand-in-hand with Kigali moto-taxi riders for African roads and the demands of daily commercial ride-hail work.
The core innovation is battery swapping: a rider pulls into a station and exchanges a depleted LFP pack for a fully charged one in under two minutes — no range anxiety, and no expensive battery to buy up front. Ampersand today powers over 5,700 e-motos covering roughly 950,000 km every day, and reports that around 9 in 10 Rwandan riders choose Alpha over the alternatives.
